Product Review

Looking for the perfect electric hot water and tea kettle? Bodum Ibis Cordless Electric Water Kettle is a convenient tea kettle or water kettle for any time you need boiling water fast and easy. Perfect for making hot water for your tea pot or French Press Coffee Maker. Why an electric water kettle when you can use your beautiful old-fashioned stove top teakettle? Water doesn't boil differently anyhow. The argument is energy savings! The Ibis water kettle boils 50 oz of water in less than 12 minutes using a 1500 watt power heating element directly in contact with the water. That means the energy enters the water without getting lost heating up the metal body of your traditional kettle. With its oval shape, this handy cordless kettle is designed to have a permanent place at the kitchen counter using a minimum of space. Made of a heat-reinforced polypropylene plastic and a stainless steel heating element, it is an indispensable and practical everyday tool for cooking - and certainly when a fast boil is needed. The easy to read water level indicator shows in ounces and liters the amount ready to boil. Whether it is 10 oz or 50 oz the Bodum kettle will automatically cut off power after the water boils a short while. No more dry boils! By the way: Bodum has provided the Ibis with a special "scale filter" which reduces the amount of calcium in your water. With this filter your tea and coffee will become even more aromatic and tasteful. capacity: 1.7 liter, 50 oz size: 1500 watt unit: 1 piece bodum number: 5500-01 color: black

Amazon.com Review

With its modern Scandinavian design, this large-capacity water kettle is attractive enough to pour water for tea in a conference room full of executives. And, with its affordable price, this kettle works equally well boiling water to dish up bulk ramen noodles for a group of college students.

Made of heavyweight polypropelene plastic, the Ibis holds a maximum of 57-1/2 fluid ounces of water (about 13 cups). It must be filled to a minimum of 8-1/2 fluid ounces--just enough to cover the heating element--to operate. A floating red water-level indicator on the outside of the Ibis rises as water is added and shows how many cups of liquid it is holding. The detachable kettle locks onto the base unit for heating and can then be removed for pouring or refilling. Also made of polypropelene, the base encases the stainless-steel heating element. The short 22-inch power cord stores beneath the base so the unit can be easily transported.

Flipping up the switch below the kettle's handle turns on the power and illuminates the indicator light on the kettle's top. The heating process is rapid and quiet: it takes only 4-1/2 minutes to boil 35 ounces of water and the sound is almost imperceptible. For safety purposes, the Ibis automatically shuts off after boiling and has a hinged safety lid to prevent boiling water from spilling and a frosted handle for a secure grip. --Cristina Vaamonde

I've got a box full of these that have been returned to our store because they burn out. The problem seems to come when the kettle is used multiple times without a cool down period. The switch internals melt down leaving you with a dead pot.

I loved this little kettle--while it lasted. It was the perfect size for my daily morning cup of tea at the office, quickly and quietly boiling enough water for about two large mugfuls, then promptly shutting itself off. I'm also a big fan of Bodum's clean lines and jaunty colors. The one-piece design might annoy some users, because you have to unplug the entire kettle in order to rinse/fill it, but for me this seemed a fair tradeoff for enhanced portability. Lightweight plastic housing is another potential complaint, but again this can be an asset if you're looking for convenience above all else. The biggest drawback is the placement of the metal heating element: it comes into direct contact with the water. After a year of regular use, my kettle's heating element is covered in grim rust-colored spots which I'm not too eager to ingest. So I'm afraid it's time to upgrade to a sturdier, if less fun-looking, electric kettle. In all, a great device if you're willing to take convenience...Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Water Kettle, December 27, 2002

Excellent little appliance for the price. In an office with no coffee bar you have to either get water and heat it in the microwave or use someones coffee maker and heat the water. In my office the only good place to get water is a water fountain that is refrigerated water and it takes 3 - 4 minutes in the microwave to heat it. This little pot takes 27 ounces of chilled water and heats it to a boil in less time that the microwave takes to heat one small cup. It's sturdy construction and small foot print are great for my small cubical. The pour spout pours a concentrated stream without splashing. The lid locks on good, but removes easily. It is easy to clean. The only way it could be improved would be to have a warmer mode that keeps the water warm, but it reheats the water so quick that the potential safety concerns with having it on constantly are outweighed by the few seconds you would save by not having to reheat. All around I think it is well worth the price.
