Product Review

Bringing water to a boil seems like the most basic of kitchen chores. And yet, it's really more complex than you might think. For example, is there a way to use less energy doing it? What's the quickest and also the safest way? The Bistro Water Kettle is the answer to all these questions. It's the most energy efficient way to boil water and there is no excess water boiled - just the amount that's really needed for your coffee or tea. It's super quick and safe as the boiling water is not exposed like it would be in a pan. The Bistro Water Kettle is made from plastic, stainless steel and silicone. It comes in two different sizes (1l and 1.5l) and in black, orange, red, green, and white.

I bought one of these in October 2010 because it looks lovely and bright, but last week it caught fire.
I smelt burning plastic and went into the kitchen to check and there was smoke coming out of the top where the red button is.

I emailed Bodum about it and their reply was more concerned to tell me that they can't give me a refund than the fact that their kettle is a fire hazard.

I wonder if anyone else had the same problem?

I was under the impression from the description that the interior of the pot would be stainless steel, which was my desire, but it is all plastic. I didn't want hot water from a heated plastic container. The hinged lid is difficult to open to fill with water,it does not open very wide. Very expensive to be entirely plastic.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is one of those products that, until you get it and use it, you never know you needed it! Right now if I had to go back to just using the microwave or stove top, I would be very sad.

Our last microwave died while I was trying to get a 4-cup glass measuring cup full of water to boil. I was standing about five feet away from the microwave, waiting for my water to be hot enough. Suddenly there was a huge noise; the door of the microwave flew open and hot water blew everywhere. The microwave refused to work after that, and we had to fork out for a new one. Ever since then, I've been paranoid about having to boil water in my microwave; yet the stove top is TOO SLOW. I've gone through a few stovetop kettles, and none of them were fun to use.

When people say it takes only a short time to boil water in the Bodum Bistro, they are not exaggerating! I can get a full pot of boiling-hot water (for tea, hot cocoa, instant cup-o-soup for the teen, etc.) in less time than...Read more
