The handle is not too hot to touch even right after the kettle whistles. The whistle is almost musical, so it is sometimes hard to notice. It's very hard to describe, but the whistle is unlike any other kettle I've heard and is a hit with me, my wife and my 9 year old daughter. Two other points worth making are:
1. The handle gets warm but remains cool enough to hold 2. When filled to its maximum, it takes about 10 min on my gas range to boil.
